The Moment Everything Felt Worth It!

I still remember the moment I saw the subject line “Georgia Institute of Technology  Admission Decision.” It was a simple email, yet it represented years of sacrifice and effort. When I opened and read “Congratulations,” my hands began to shake. I sat down, overwhelmed, and let my tears fall. I had been accepted into the Master of Science in Cybersecurity program at Georgia Tech. For the world, it was just an admission letter, but for me, it was proof that nothing about my beginning had the power to define my ending.
What made the moment powerful wasn’t just the acceptance but everything behind it. I remembered arriving in the United States at a young age by myself, without speaking English, and unsure of what the future held. I remembered everything it took me to learn the English language, from repeating words until they made sense, struggling through sentences, feeling frustrated, embarrassed, and exhausted, but never giving up.
I remembered studying late at night for my GED, slowly building my future step by step. I remembered becoming the first generation and the first person in my family to attend college. I earned a degree in Computer Science, spent years working as a software engineer, and later transitioned into Cybersecurity. Along the way, I learned not only how systems are built, but how vulnerable they can be and how important it is to protect them.
Applying to graduate school was not an easy task. I worked carefully on my application, often late at night, during one of the most demanding seasons of my life, shortly after welcoming a child. It required discipline, focus, and belief in myself during moments when energy was limited and responsibilities were high, but I knew what this opportunity meant to me.
Being accepted into Georgia Tech’s Master’s in Cybersecurity program means a lot to me, and it really felt like more than an acceptance. As an immigrant, a first-generation college graduate, and a mother, this moment reflects years of working hard and effort. It reminds me that even when the journey is challenging, showing up with discipline and purpose can open meaningful opportunities.

What I Learned Earning the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Certification

Cloud is no longer the future of technology, but it’s the present. Organizations are moving their applications, services, and data to cloud platforms to improve scalability, flexibility, and efficiency. Because of this, understanding cloud technology has become an important skill for cybersecurity professionals.

To strengthen my cloud knowledge and expand my cybersecurity skill set, I recently earned the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification. This certification provided me with a strong foundation in cloud computing concepts while helping me better understand the security principles that play an important role in protecting cloud environments.

 

Why I decided to get AWS Certification

I decided to get the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification because cloud computing is becoming a major part of today’s technology world. Many organizations rely on cloud services to run their businesses, and cybersecurity professionals need to understand how these environments work.

Understanding Cloud fundamentals

One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the difference between traditional on-premises infrastructure and cloud-based environments. While I was already familiar with the benefits of cloud computing, studying for the certification helped me understand how organizations use cloud services to improve scalability, reduce operational costs, and deploy resources more efficiently.

The Importance of Cloud Security
As someone working in cybersecurity, I found the security and compliance topics particularly interesting. The certification introduced me to key AWS security concepts, including Identity and Access Management (IAM), Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), encryption, monitoring, and compliance frameworks.
These topics showed me how important it is to protect cloud resources and manage access properly. Strong security controls help organizations reduce risk and protect sensitive information.
 
Balancing Work, School, and Family
Preparing for the certification was not always easy. Like many professionals, I had to balance work, graduate school, and family responsibilities while studying.
There were days when finding time to study was challenging, but staying consistent helped me stay on track. This experience taught me that small daily efforts can lead to big achievements.
Conclusion
Earning this certification was more than just passing an exam. It was an opportunity to learn new skills, strengthen my understanding of cloud technology, and continue growing as a cybersecurity professional.
Technology will continue to change, and continuous learning will always be important. I am excited to keep building my skills and applying what I learn to help organizations stay secure in an increasingly cloud-driven world.
